How Much Yarn does it Take to Knit a Sweater?

Based on gauge. These are approximate quantities for a simple pullover or vest in stockinette stitch with a chest width of 40". For cardigans, add 100 extra yards. For turtleneck and cowls, add 200 extra yards.

Oversize sweaters add about 25%, all-over pattern stitches add 33 % more yardage. Sweaters with more than one color also require more yarn.

GAUGE Needle Size PULLOVER VEST
Super Bulky 2 - 2.1/2 stitches to inch Size 10 and larger 700-750 yards 400-450 yards
Bulky or Chunky 3 - 3 1/2 stitches to inch 9 - 10 1/2 800-850 yards

480-550 yards

Heavy worsted 4 stitches to inch 7 - 9 850-950 yards 530-600 yards
Worsted 4 1/2 stitches to inch 6 - 9 950-1000 yards 530-675 yards
Worsted or DK (British) 5 stitches to inch 4 - 6 1300-1500 yards 620-725 yards
Sport 6 stitches to inch 4 - 6 1450-1600 yards

885-945 yards

Fingering or Baby 7 stitches to inch 0 - 3 1560-1700 yards 925-1000 yards

An airy, lacy garment can be knitted on much larger needles. For example: Brushed Mohair using a size 17 needle.

Estimating Knitting Gauge Using WPI.  WRAPS PER INCH or by Yarn Size

This is meant to be a starting point for sampling.  Machine and hand knitters need to sample, with at least 4" square.  A difference of 1 stitch can add up to enormous size differences.  Not all yarns fit nearly into a single category, but with adjustments to needle size you should get the correct gauge.

Yarn Size WPI Approx. Gauge Needle size approx. yd/oz. approx. yd/lb
Fingering 16 wpi 7 st/inch 1-3 110-144 1700-2300
Sport 14 wpi 5 - 6 st/inch 4-6 75-110 1200-1600
Worsted 12 wpi 4-5 st./inch 7-9 55-75 850-1100
Bulky 9 wpi 3-3 st./inch 10-11 30-55 500-900
